I didn't decide what to do for my new year challenge. I didn't really decide anything. I still have a cold that has sort of held on and made my whole day tired and slower than usual. So 2019 started with a lack of motivation and energy. I did a lot less than I wanted … Continue reading January 1: 2019? Okay.

December 29: Chat Pack for Kids
Annika got a "Chat Pack for Kids" in her stocking. It's basically a box with a bunch of cards with questions to ponder. She's been asking me questions for about an hour now. She loves to ask questions and answer them too, so it was a great gift. Right now she is asking about what … Continue reading December 29: Chat Pack for Kids
December 28: yep, I’m sick
I finally got what I think is my first virus of the 18-19 school year. Usually I get it in September and by now I'm onto my second cold, but this autumn was unusually healthy in the virus department. I picked it up from Anders, who came down with it on Christmas. Dak said he … Continue reading December 28: yep, I’m sick
December 21: Happy Solstice
The longest night of the year is meant to be celebrated by candles to light the darkness and roaring bonfires to keep us warm. Today, I got a bag of mandarin oranges and some donuts for my high school kids (oranges are kind of like the sun, and hey, we can all use the vitamin … Continue reading December 21: Happy Solstice
December 12: not giving up
Everything in me wants to give up on things right now. Maybe it's the string of cloudy, gloomy days, or maybe it's the short days, or maybe it's that resources are tight while needs are high, but I'm way off my game. I'm forgetting things more than usual, I'm hyperfocused on things that aren't helpful … Continue reading December 12: not giving up
September 28: Boats and Brrrrrgrass
We could see our breath this morning and we can see it again now. We're sitting out in the field by the river, listening to The Lil Smokies right now. Annika has crawled into the back of our pop-up shelter, curled up in a blanket, and fallen asleep. I don't know how she is sleeping … Continue reading September 28: Boats and Brrrrrgrass
August 10: tired!
I have a lot I'd like to write about. It's the last day of the lake vacation, it's our 16th wedding anniversary, and I'm still concerned about the primary election. However, it's late and it has been a long week and a long day. Today I painted more faces. The half-face monster and minion mouth … Continue reading August 10: tired!
August 9: Primary election is tough; I painted faces!
I have been reading and thinking a lot about the upcoming primary election (I'm a voter and you should be too), but it's gotten pretty gross. I am leaning toward one gubernatorial candidate that I truly support, but have some nagging worries that the DFL will split badly and allow the worst of the three … Continue reading August 9: Primary election is tough; I painted faces!
August 8: Wikipedia hole
I fell down the Wikipedia hole tonight. I'm note really sure how I even got started, but I think when we were sitting by the fire, we got to talking about asteroids and meteors and meteorites because of the Perseid meteor shower. That led to impact events, which led to extinction events, which led to … Continue reading August 8: Wikipedia hole
August 7: fire nights
We have a really beautiful fire, the breeze is keeping the mosquitoes away, the waves are rippling on the shore, and I'm half asleep in a chair. I'm only doing my writing now because I know I'm going to sit here until I'm pretty much asleep. We have a chimney fire and tonight is perfect.
