January 14: A case of the Mondays; or FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU…..

Today was the worst. Not because of anyone else or anything – I had a fine day, I guess – but if something could go wrong, it did today.

This morning before school, I was grabbing something out of the downstairs fridge and I broke a shelf, causing all sorts of bottles to fall on the floor. A bottle of switchel broke and went everywhere: under the shelves, under the freezer, all over my slippers, and everywhere on a newly cleaned and mopped floor. It was 7:00 am and this was going to make me late.

I cleaned it up as well as I could, careful not to slice my hands open on the glass. I put up a barrier so Perry the dog couldn’t get to it and lick the floor and get tiny shards of bottle glass in his tongue. I got out the door late.

At the middle school, the heater in my room was out of control. I was sweating within ten minutes. It was so warm, I had no patience for anything, which is a difficult mood to be in as a middle school teacher.

In first hour, I spilled my coffee all over my shelf at the front of the room where my students’ assignments and my handouts were. Everything was covered. My slideshow clicker was in the middle of the lake of coffee. It was a holy mess.

At lunchtime, my spork broke. That sounds like a dumb thing, but it was a nicer camping spork and my utensil for the day. I had corn and chili. I’m glad there was an extra spoon in the kitchenette.

I warned my high school classes that it had been a terrible day. They were pretty good about it.

I had a million things to do after school and my pants didn’t have pockets, so I didn’t have my phone on me. As a result, I missed the messages from a friend who was meeting me at the high school – out of her way – to pick up something. Yep. I’m the worst.

When I finally got home, I was starving so I binged on food and took a super hot shower. I’m lucky I didn’t drown in it, considering the way my day went. I did some fairly mindless checking of simple practice assignments and gave some feedback so I can give something back to classes tomorrow. I have a better idea of where they are and it felt good to do some simple but necessary work (that I didn’t spill on or ruin in some way).

Tomorrow will be better. It has to be.

It. Has. To. Be.
