December 15: the Ides of December

It’s actually not the ides of December, because I guess they were on the 13th. It doesn’t make sense to me why they would be the 13th. I thought it was the 15th of every month.

I guess the Romans didn’t count their months from beginning to end in a chronological order; instead, they counted down to days, and the ides were in the middle. Apparently the ides are sacred to Jupiter. I don’t really get how the time system works, but I guess it made sense to the people back then. I suppose in some ways, we’re all counting our way to something: for me, it’s winter break. For Annika, it’s Christmas. So maybe that makes sense. Maybe the Romans had better lives because they were counting up to something. I’m not sure why they would, but maybe it made a little difference? It’s nice to have something to look forward to and anticipate, even if it’s a good dinner.

I’m not really sure why I got to thinking about this. I always think about the word “ides” when it’s near the 15th. It’s also my dad’s birthday, which is happier, so happy birthday dad!
