November 23: The Blackest of Fridays

Someone broke into our house while we were sleeping last night. They came in through the window and grabbed a purse, and went through a car. They had to know we were home; there was three cars in the driveway. It was pretty bold.

I am trying to stay focused on the positive: no one was hurt and not much was taken in the grand scheme of things. They didn’t even take any of Dak’s beer that was sitting outside. Still, what kind of person goes and does something like this? Who decides that their best option is to slice through someone’s screen, jimmy open a window, and take someone’s sense of security in their own home? And on the night of Thanksgiving?

It’s still unreal, to be honest. We made sure everything is safe tonight, but we’re all having a little trouble calming down. Annika was particularly shook. She kept going around the house, pointing out safety features and ways we could be better protected. She made clear that her wallet was safe and made sure we knew that she is very careful to keep it safe. She went out and helped search of things dropped on the ground, hoping we could find the second set of keys that was taken.

I hope that whoever it was finds a way to escape the terrible life they are obviously living – breaking into houses to get a little cash in the middle of the night seems like it would be an awful existence. I hope that we get back to feeling safe in our home soon.
