Tonight we time travel once more, to relive the past for an hour at 2 am. I used to LOVE fall back – what’s not to love about an extra hour of sleep? – but lately I’ve been pretty ambivalent about it. First of all, it means nights are going to feel darker sooner, and the mornings aren’t as important as the evening. This also means that we’ll have to “spring ahead” in a few months anyway, and spring ahead is much less fun because we lose an hour of sleep and everyone is messed up for days.
Then there is the research that shows how accidents and health problems increase when the time changes. That makes sense – I will be driving home in the dark in a week as well as going to work when it’s pretty much dark. Kids will be walking home in the dark. Everyone in the culture is a little jet lagged for a while.
Anyhow, I still have a soft spot for fall back. An extra hour of weekend is nice, even when I acknowledge that it’s pretty useless.
