October 20: Ghosts

I have a terrible fascination with horror films, but I can’t watch them. Seriously – I just leave or watch through my fingers/from behind Dak’s shoulder. I have always been particularly scared of/fascinated by ghosts and the paranormal. Maybe it was Poltergeist (the first real ghost movie I watched), maybe it was just the general unease in my childhood home (which felt haunted), but I am bad with ghost stories, even though they pull me in. For example, when I went to see The Blair Witch Project with my friend in college, I didn’t sleep that night and I needed a nightlight for at least a week. My imagination is a powerful tool; ghost stories make it a weapon. And I know this.

So in my infinite wisdom, I checked out The Haunting Of Hill House tonight. By myself. In the dark. While my ghost-shielding protector husband guy is in Bemidji. It’s almost like I am sabotaging myself and I can’t stop looking.

I finally did stop, though, when I realized I was no longer comfortable in the dark and I was noticing every little creak in the house. Luckily, Annika’s little soft-glow animal lamp thing is in my room because she uses it to read while I write. It’s on now.

Anders came downstairs and opened my bedroom door without announcing himself and scared the shit out of me. He thought that was hilarious. It probably was. He also thinks it’s hilarious that I have a light on in here. I told him that it would not, in any circumstances, be funny to scare me purposefully tonight. He said, “yeah it would.”

When I woke up early this morning to go to the farmer’s market, I comforted myself with the promise that I’d have a long, happy night sleep tonight. Yep. That worked out great.

As for the show, I highly recommend it for fans of horror genre or for people who want to have a reason for insomnia. Sure, I couldn’t watch it, but you can!
