Today I continued my superhero movie kick, and I think I’ve figured out why I have been enjoying them so much. It’s nice to get lost in a fantasy world where the heroes win and the bad guy loses. The world has been so full of the opposite lately. It feels like “bad guys” are winning all over, from elections to suicides to disease. The world feels heavy as hell, and the superhero narrative feels like a good temporary distraction.

Tonight I went to see Avengers: Infinity War, though, and it was a fun movie but pretty brutal for an action superhero blockbuster movie. Without spoilers, it doesn’t leave the viewer with the same feeling of redemption and hope that a lot of the movies do at the end.

Still, it left me thinking about a lot of things. It’s good to have some escapism when the world feels so heavy. I will need to work on taking more breaks from the news in order to reenergize for the work ahead.
