May 31: Graduation and This is America

Two things today. First, it was the last day for seniors at my new school. They made it, I made it. I learned so much from them this trimester and (at least they said) they learned more than they expected from me. Every one of my seniors passed my class, and they all earned it.

This post-it display with positive messages was the first thing I saw today and it was still up at the end of the day when I took this picture. I get to teach in a pretty cool place.

Second thing: Annika and I heard “This is America” in the car and tonight we watched the video (wish appropriate mom-hand editing). She asked a bunch of questions, but ultimately got quite a bit of it. She asked about the background, and I told her that the dancers are distractions from the serious problems happening in the world. She asked, “OH, is that why they’re so blurry?” Precocious kid.

On a side note, I was in my freshman class today and a kid looked at me and goes “This is America” like the song, so I responded “don’t catch you slippin’ now” and he looked at me kind of weird, then looked at his friend who had totally gotten the reference and asked “are those the words?” After the answer, he looked at me and said “miss, did you know that Childish Gambino is actually Donald Glover?” I smiled and said “yeah, isn’t that crazy?” His eyes widened: “Yeah, whoa.”

I’m pretty sure some of my students think I live in my desk and just come out to teach them, like some sort of teacher genie. Bless their hearts.
