Annika saw me setting up to write. She asked me, “what’s gonna be the title today?” And I responded, “I don’t know.” She looked at me for a beat, then looked down at my phone as I typed the title, then laughed.
“Really!?”
“Yeah.”
“What are you going to write about that?”
“Don’t know. Probably something.”
She paused. “How can you write that much about I don’t know?”
At this point, I was committed to the joke, and to be honest, I was kind of dreading writing tonight because once again I didn’t have any big ideas and it just kind of felt like a chore. I’m at that point, maybe, in the year of writing where it’s lost the excitement of holy crap I’m actually following through! Now it just kind of feels like another thing I have to do. I’m working through it. So once I wrote down I don’t know, then I felt like “hey, I have a topic!”
I was committed, so here I am writing about I don’t know because I don’t know. Annika is writing poems about bedtime and asking me how to spell things like pillow and monster. She’s having trouble coming up with “e” words, which makes sense. You can only use egg and elephant so many times, and neither works really well for sleep or bedtime themed acrostic poems.
I will say this, though, she has been really dedicated to writing her three poems a night. I’m kind of a proud mama.
