March 12: Almost Everything Sucks

Yeah, I said it. I’m in that place. Everything sucks and I hate everything. Well, almost everything. Most things. I feel inadequate as a parent and partner because I’m tired all the time and depressed. I feel unsure about my future and anxious. It’s still cold outside and I’m sick of the slursh that’s everywhere. I am sick of my winter clothes, but I’m pretty sure most of my spring and summer clothes won’t fit very well. I’m stressed out about all these Girl Scout cookies I have in my basement so if you are reading this, you are obligated to buy a box from me because I literally don’t have enough money to purchase them all and we’ve been busy and stuck inside because of the stupid snow so we haven’t sold them. That makes me feel inadequate too. I’m a bad cookie mama. Ugh.

Today was the first day of classes for spring trimester and overall, it went really well. I connected with a number of kids right from the start. I told my Legends and Short Stories (mythology) class about my idea for a Monster March Madness where we research different monsters and pair them up against each other to see who is the baddest mythical monster. A boy who looked surly and cranky from the start of class got super excited and ACTUALLY STARTED LOOKING UP AND MAKING A LIST OF LEGENDARY MONSTERS. I think that will be epic. They also want to learn about Greek mythology and do some comparisons of Grimm fairy tales to the sanitized ones we learned. I will be honest: I was kind of nervous about teaching that class: a bunch of seniors at the end of the year and I have to teach mythology and epic legends? But I’m actually pretty excited now. Hopefully it lasts.

Annika told me more about Hozay the chicken today. Hozay and his friends, two other chickens, two rabbits, and a cat, went on a trip to a coral reef today at recess. Hozay can breathe underwater, but the other chickens, the rabbits, and the cat needed SCUBA gear. The coyote that chases them took a ship; he didn’t go into the water.

Hozay has a mustache. It’s brown. His feathers are all blue, his eyes are orange, his beak is made of iron, and he wears glasses. He loves candy, especially chocolate. He also eats roasted peanuts, but not other kinds. I asked. He will also eat fish if it’s available, which it was at the coral reef.

So not everything sucks. A lot of things suck. Almost everything. But not everything.
