February 3: I hate slime.

The slime craze that has been all the rage in elementary schools for the past couple years? I hate it. I wish I could love it because Annika (and apparently every other kid) loves it, but I can’t. It gives me a headache because most of the time, it’s made with shaving cream or some crap and it stinks. The smell gets on Annika’s hands and then I can’t stand being around her, which makes her feel bad and that makes me feel bad… ugh. So I hate slime.

It turns out you can totally make slime without stinky shaving cream. You just need some borax and some glue and water and stuff. It’s easy and it doesn’t smell. The problem is, everyone is afraid to make it with borax because they think that it is more dangerous than just using shaving cream, which I guess it is, but then it smells and gives people headaches. Annika finally made some of this slime today and it’s actually pretty fun. She still has some of the terrible stinky slime, though, so I’m avoiding it as best I can because I cannot stand the smell.

These are the kind of dilemmas I deal with as a mom. It’s really boring and mundane and it takes up way more of my life than it should.

Annika had to change shirts and wash her hands furiously before applying a large amount of orange lotion before I would let her come lay in bed with me tonight. I can tolerate some smells, the ones that are more organic in nature (this was a Body Shop lotion with essential oils). It worked well enough that I can stand to be around her again without a headache.

Small victories.
