January 20: A Saturday Without Debate

I woke up earlier than I like to, but it was for a good reason: I got to go see Annika play basketball for the first time since December. Every game is on a Saturday, and since I have debate throughout the fall and winter, I don’t get to see her games much.

Afterwards, we went shopping at the co-op, where I hadn’t been for weeks. I love getting groceries at the co-op. The food is local and eco-friendly, and it definitely seems like it tastes better. The people there are more helpful and knowledgeable. It just feels better shopping there than at a huge, overwhelming, overly-lit supermarket.

We stopped at Costco to pick up Annika’s first pair of glasses ever. She was so excited – she kept saying “I can see things! Everything looks so clear!” She wore them the rest of the day and kept lifting them to compare what she could see before and after glasses.

I had been feeling uneasy about my plans for the next week or two in my classes, so after eating lunch, I went up to the school and worked in my classroom for a few hours planning and grading. I love working so close to home and in a classroom that feels comfortable. I had the lights low and soft ambient music; I was able to get so much done without distraction.

I left to come home and eat dinner with my family satisfied that I am ready for the week and knowing I could relax. We watched a movie together uninterrupted: The Secret Life of Pets. I recommend it -it’s a cute family cartoon with some funny moments.

I’m getting ready for bed now and it seems odd that I have another day. Typically, everything I do on the weekend needs to be done in one day, because I’m always exhausted on Friday night because of school, and I’m always exhausted on Saturday night because of debate. I have another day. I’m going to sleep in. I’m going to watch football and hang out with my kids. I have time to do things.

It’s kind of wonderful.
